Course overview

Inside this course

Most parents arrive at questions about their child's mental health carrying two unhelpful ideas at once: that mental health means the absence of difficult feelings, and that any real difficulty is a verdict on their parenting. Both are wrong, and both get in the way of seeing clearly. This Foundations course begins with the lens: mental health is a capacity — to feel hard things, recover and keep developing — and distress in childhood has a developmental accent, showing up as stomach aches and tantrums at five, irritability and concealment at ten, and behaviour at fifteen that overlaps almost perfectly with ordinary adolescence.

  • Apply the three clinical markers — persistence, pervasiveness and impairment — to decide when a closer look is warranted
  • Recognise anxiety as an avoidance engine and low mood as a withdrawal spiral, and stop the loving responses that maintain each
