When Your Child Comes Out
How you respond in the first conversations matters more than having all the answers — first responses, privacy and who gets to know, questions that can wait, and repair when it doesn't go well.

Inside this course
Most parents imagine, if they imagine it at all, that a child coming out will arrive as a single dramatic scene with time to prepare a considered response. In practice it more often arrives sideways — in the car, over text, mid-argument, or offered almost casually while your attention is on something else entirely — and your child is usually watching your face before you have had a chance to organise your thoughts. This course is built around a simple but demanding idea: you do not need to have resolved your own feelings, understood every term, or have a plan for the future in order to respond well in that first moment.
You'll finish with
- Understand what your immediate facial expression and first words communicate to a child coming out, and practise a small set of steady, safe first responses
- Distinguish the questions that can comfortably wait from the small number that matter to ask soon, and learn how to ask them without pressure
- Think clearly about disclosure and privacy, so decisions about who else finds out belong to your child rather than being made for them
