Course overview

Inside this course

Home can be made affirming through deliberate choices, but school corridors, sports teams, group chats and extended family gatherings operate by rules you did not set and cannot fully supervise. This course is about the specific skill of parenting well into that uncertainty: understanding what actually makes a school climate safe rather than merely policy-compliant, knowing how to respond to slurs and bullying in ways that protect your child without making them the centre of an escalating conflict they never asked for, and recognising that friendship and online community often do more for a young LGBTQ+ person's sense of belonging than any single adult intervention could. It also tackles one of the hardest ongoing judgement calls parents face: when your advocacy is genuinely needed, and when your child needs you to trust their read of a room you are not standing in.

Learning outcomes

  • Assess a school's actual climate for an LGBTQ+ student, beyond its written policies
